Exfoliation is a proven way to keep your skin young looking. The explanation for this is pretty simple and logical. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells on that are usually found on the outermost layer of the skin. Once removed, they reveal a fresh and smoother layer that would otherwise be stifled or clogged by dead skin cells.
The process of exfoliation is carried out using exfoliating products which may be chemical-based and some of the most popular products are formulations based on Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids. Also referred to as chemical peels, these formulations contain about 10 to 70% of these acids depending on who is using them. The lower concentration is allowed for over-the-counter consumer preparations while the higher concentrations (20% to 70%) are applied only by professional cosmetologist and dermatologists.
Chemical peels is one of the essential strategies in many anti aging programs because, depending on how it is done, they are quite effective at getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles and their effects usually last long.
However, since they are basically acid substances, they are expected to cause some irritation on the skin especially for the higher concentration of 20% or more. Hence, it is usually advised that those who want to use this product should test an OTC preparation first on a small portion of the skin to see how it will react to the acid. If it results in a bad reaction, then chemical peels may not be a good route for you. However, it is good to point out that for professionally used formulations (those with higher concentrations), patients are expected to experience severe irritation, redness and oozing skin for up to 4 weeks.
If you cannot go for acid-based peels, you could opt for exfoliating products that employ the buff-away technique that scrubs off dead skin cells and dirt. These are usually cream-based soap applications or exfoliating scrub; and some of the most recommended ones are creams that contain jojoba beads and oatmeal which are good at gently scrubbing those dead skin cells away.
Developing a sound skin care routine that involves exfoliation is a great help in any anti skin aging efforts. However, because it may involve chemicals that could potentially harm your skin, it is best to consult a professional before incorporating exfoliating products into your regimen.
